What is a Cochlear Implant?

A cochlear implant is a highly sophisticated medical device that helps people with moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss hear sound more clearly. While hearing aids amplify sound, cochlear implants bypass damaged parts of the inner ear to send signals directly to the hearing nerve. The brain can then process these signals as sound.
The implant includes both an external and internal device. The external device sits just behind the ear and is used as a microphone to pick up sound. It then transfers the sound to the internal device which is surgically implanted under the skin and inside the cochlea. Together, they work to provide better hearing to individuals who no longer find benefit from hearing aids.

Who is a Candidate for Cochlear Implants?

Cochlear implants are typically for individuals who receive little to no benefit from traditional hearing aids. This can include people of all ages. Candidacy is determined through a thorough evaluation process that will consist of:

Mapping and Ongoing Care

Mapping helps to maximize better hearing and support the brain's ability to interpret new sounds accurately. It is an essential part of the journey that allows users to fully experience the benefits of their cochlear implant.
Regular mapping appointments ensure that the device provides optimal performance. Even small changes in your hearing and lifestyle can affect how your implant works, so keeping up with mapping appointments is the key to long-term success.

Why Mapping is Essential

Anyone with a cochlear implant, children and adults, must have mapping performed. This happens at the activation of your cochlear implant and in the following months and years. It is especially important for those who have recently received their implant because the brain and auditory system are continuously learning and adjusting to sounds.

01.

What Happens During a Session

A typical mapping session at our clinic lasts about an hour. During that time frame, we check the functionality of the implant and see how well it is delivering sound.

02.

Adjustments and Listening

We may make adjustments to the programming; in which case you will be asked to listen to a series of tones so we can evaluate your threshold of hearing and comfort levels.

03.

Making Speech Clear and Comfortable

Our goal is to make speech sound comfortable and clear without being too loud. We then assess your performance with the cochlear implant in quiet and, when necessary, noisy environments.

What to Expect from Follow-Up Appointments

Cochlear implants don’t operate on a “set it and forget it” basis. Over time, your brain adapts, your listening environment may change, and your hearing needs may shift. Regular mapping appointments are important for continuing your hearing success. Benefits of consistent follow-up care include:

Hear Speech Clearly in Any Setting

Improved speech understanding in both quiet and noisy settings.

Enjoy Better Sound and Clarity

Better sound quality and overall listening experience.

Have Less Fatigue and More Comfort

Reduced listening fatigue and increased comfort.

Technical Support When You Need It

Support in troubleshooting and solving technical issues.

Encouragement for Your Journey

Ongoing encouragement and counseling during your hearing journey.

Support That Lasts Beyond the Setup

We work with you beyond just the initial setup.
Over time, you will experience less listening fatigue and better comfort. Routine care at the clinic also provides technical support for troubleshooting issues and personalized guidance for any new features or accessories. You will also receive support for software updates and any questions you may have about the implants.

Our Commitment to Local Cochlear Implant Care

In Northern Michigan, access to cochlear implant support is limited. With only one ENT surgeon serving the area, many patients may face long travel times and delays in follow-up care. At Dr. Eimers Hearing Clinic, we are proud to offer local, expert care to patients in the community. Whether you were implanted by another office or are newly activated, we are here to make sure you do not miss the follow-up care that is needed.
Our approach is grounded in medical expertise, strong commitment, and deep listening. We collaborate with implant surgeons, follow best practices, and ensure that every appointment is tailored to what is best for you.
Cochlear implant care is not a side service; it is a vital aspect of what we do. We are here to help you stay confident, connected, and supported along your hearing journey.
