What is Cerumen (Earwax)?

Cerumen, more commonly known as earwax, is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal. It plays an important role in protecting your ears by trapping debris, dust, and the most harmful bacteria before they can reach deeper into the ear canal. In many cases, cerumen gradually moves outward on its own and then falls out unnoticed.
However, when there is a build-up of cerumen that hardens, it can lead to or cause uncomfortable symptoms, sometimes impacting the hearing. While it is tempting to use cotton swabs or ear candling remedies, these tend to make the issue worse. Safe and professional removal ensures your ears stay healthy and your hearing remains clear.

Signs You May Need Earwax Removal

Some earwax buildup is normal, but too much can cause real issues. Symptoms can be mild initially, but they may become uncomfortable or impair your ability to hear well over time.
Common signs that you may need professional earwax removal include:

Sudden or gradual hearing loss in one or both ears.

If you’re noticing any of these symptoms, it’s best to have your ears checked. A quick exam can tell whether earwax is the cause or if another condition may be involved.

When to Come In for a Check-Up

If you are experiencing symptoms like hearing changes or clogged ears, it may be time to schedule a visit. For some patients, wax builds up slowly over time and is not really noticeable until it becomes a complete blockage. Others may need routine cleanings, primarily if their ear canals overproduce earwax causing the ear canal to become blocked more frequently.

Earwax and Hearing Aids

No patient should have to struggle with hearing aid problems caused by earwax buildup. That’s why we check for wax, clean your devices, and help you prevent future issues.

01.

Why Buildup Happens

Hearing aid users are more likely to experience wax buildup. This is partly because the devices block the natural pathway that allows wax to freely move out of the ear. This can lead to poor sound quality, feedback, or whistling from the devices. This can also damage the hearing aids themselves.

02.

Routine Clean & Check

Routine clean and checks of your hearing aids can help your devices work better and last longer. During your appointment, we will check on your hearing aids and look for any signs of wax-related damage, as well as look into your ear canals to determine if earwax buildup is problematic for you.

03.

Guidance and Tools

Our team will also offer guidance on the use of wax guards, cleaning tools, and other maintenance strategies tailored to your specific devices, to keep them in top condition.
